Liberty responds to recent violence across the UK
Posted on 06 Aug 2024
Responding to the recent racist attacks and violence in the UK over the past week, Liberty has issued the following statement:
“We stand in solidarity with the communities who have been affected by the horrifying scenes of racist, Islamophobic violence in the past week. These are not protests, they are acts of violence against some of the most marginalised people in our society.
“For too many years, we’ve seen politicians – both at the very top of the government and at the fringes – whip up division and intolerance. Much of what we have seen in recent days is a result of that.
“But we have also seen communities come together to rebuild after riots and to defend their neighbours. These are the values that we must uphold in society.
“Serious conversations need to be had to ensure the safety and rights of asylum seekers, Muslim communities and people of colour, both now and in the future. This recent violence cannot continue, and it must not be repeated.”
