Liberty Response to the Government blocking Scotland’s Gender Recognition Bill
Posted on 17 Jan 2023
Everyone deserves to be treated fairly, with compassion and with dignity. It is deeply concerning that Gov yesterday blocked Scotland’s Gender Recognition Bill. This Bill would have simplified the way trans people could make their identities recognised by law and won overwhelming support from members of the Scottish Parliament.
This Bill would align trans rights in Scotland with over 30 countries, including Canada and the USA. Most importantly, it would lead to a reduction in harm for trans people, for whom the current system simply does not work.
We continue to stand in solidarity with the trans community, and with all the activists and organisations working to create a world in which all trans people feel safe and supported.
