Current vacancies

Liberty is looking for an exceptional Policy & Campaigns Officer.

This position, which sits in the Policy & Campaigns team, plays a key role in developing and implementing Liberty’s policy and campaigning priorities: undertaking high quality research, influencing decision makers, building coalitions, producing policy and campaign materials, providing policy input to strategic litigation, and building public and political support for Liberty’s work.

We are seeking someone who holds Liberty’s values and ambitions close to their heart, as we work to ensure everyone in the United Kingdom is treated fairly, with dignity and respect. This is a key role in securing the long-term policy change needed to protect the human rights and civil liberties of everyone who lives in the UK.

Policy & Campaigns Officers monitor and respond to policy threats to our human rights frameworks, to our rights to protest and to live free from discrimination. They work with political players and civil servants to steer policy and legislation. They produce high-quality, persuasive content and translate complex legal and policy arguments in a clear and compelling way for mass audiences. They lead and support other human rights and civil society organisations, lending expertise and building solidarity. We have worked with civil society to fight back against the Police, Crimes, Sentencing and Courts Act 2022 and the Public Order Act 2023 and to see off threats to our Human Rights Act.

We are looking for a strategic thinker who brings a collaborative approach to their work. You will have policy and research experience in human rights, or a related field such as the equality sector or social welfare sector. You will have a strong understanding of how to secure policy change in challenging political environments.

You will have a strong commitment to Liberty’s anti-oppression values and strategy.

Liberty fully embraces flexible working and is committed to employee development. We aim to encourage people from all backgrounds to work with us and are particularly interested in hearing from people from minority backgrounds and all socio-economic sections of society. Liberty supports hybrid working, with a minimum of two days per week in the Westminster office.

The deadline for applications is Midnight Sunday 24 November 2024.

Applications received after this deadline will not be considered.

Please be aware that we do not accept CVs for this role. All applicants must complete the application form to apply.

First round interviews will be held on the week commencing 2 December 2024

Second round interview will be held on the week commencing 9 December 2024

Application Form Guidance

  • You will score higher, if you are able to refer to as many of the essential and desirable criteria as possible. A tip for doing this is to use the criteria as headings in your personal statement.
  • Give strong examples – you can see how applications are scored from our person criteria.
  • Using the STAR method can help when evidencing competencies and giving examples:
    • Situation: the situation you had to deal with
    • Task: the task you were given to do
    • Action: the action you took
    • Result: what happened as a result of your action and what you learned from the experience
  • For your application to standout, spend time researching Liberty and the work we do  (our website is a great place to start). Draw meaningful connections with your own motivations, work experience and personal experience.
  • Be concise, keep your answers clear and to the point and avoid long sentences. Bullet points can sometimes work well.
  • Try to use the full word count (but do not exceed it).
  • Ensure your application is proofread for errors and set out neatly.

Positive Action

Liberty are committed to pursuing a diverse and inclusive workforce and are trialing a Positive Action approach to our recruitment and selection process. Positive Action allows employers to take action to minimise disadvantages that groups with particular protected characteristics face in the workforce.

In addition to anonymous application forms, some of the new ways we are attempting to level the playing field is by introducing the Guaranteed Interview Scheme and Anonymous First-Round Interviews:

GUARANTEED INTERVIEW SCHEME

The Guaranteed Interview Scheme will expand on our commitments as a Disability Confident Employer to offer an interview to an applicant who declares they have a disability and meets the minimum requirement.

We are expecting a high volume of applications for this role and so will be unable to guarantee an interview for all of those eligible for the positive action scheme and who have scored above the median score on this occasion. However, we are still committed to taking a positive action approach and providing interview opportunities for strong applicants who are historically marginalised in recruitment.

Liberty usually shortlist around 6 candidates for first round interview and on this occasion will be opening a further 2 interview slots for those that identify as having one of the protected characteristics within the scheme and who score the highest.

(Please note that this will not affect how we shortlist for the original 6 interview spaces which is conducted anonymously and based on the highest scores in the pool. The 2 extra interview space offered as part of the positive action scheme will be in addition).”

This scheme is applicable to individuals who identify as:

  • Disabled
  • A member of the Global Majority (people from Black, Asian, Mixed, and other ethnic groups who often racialised as ‘ethnic minorities)
  • A member of the LGBTQ+ community

You can take part in the Guaranteed Interview Scheme by selecting that you are a member of one of these communities on your application and agreeing to participate.

ANONYMOUS FIRST-ROUND INTERVIEWS

Anonymous first-round interviews involve candidates conducting their first-round interview online via zoom, with their camera off and microphone on. This is to reduce the scope of unconscious bias based on physical appearance and attributes.  The interview panel will be on camera for the interview, and the second-round interview will be in person.

Any questions about the scheme and our positive action approach, please contact us at hr@libertyhumanrights.org.uk.
