Application Form Guidance

  • You will score higher, if you are able to refer to as many of the essential and desirable criteria as possible. A tip for doing this is to use the criteria as headings in your personal statement.
  • Give strong examples – you can see how applications are scored from our person criteria.
  • Using the STAR method can help when evidencing competencies and giving  examples:

Situation: the situation you had to deal with

Task: the task you were given to do

Action: the action you took

Result: what happened as a result of your action and what you learned from the experience

  • For your application to standout, spend time researching Liberty and the work we do  (our website is a great place to start). Draw meaningful connections with your own motivations, work experience and personal experience.
  • Be concise, keep your answers clear and to the point and avoid long sentences. Bullet points can sometimes work well.
  • Try to use the full work count (but do not exceed it).
  • Ensure your application is proofread for errors and set out neatly.

Positive Action

Liberty are committed to pursuing a diverse and inclusive workforce and are trialing a Positive Action approach to our recruitment and selection process. Positive Action allows employers to take action to minimise disadvantages that groups with particular protected characteristics face in the workforce.

In addition to anonymous application forms, some of the new ways we are attempting to level the playing field is by introducing the Guaranteed Interview Scheme and Anonymous First-Round Interviews:

GUARANTEED INTERVIEW SCHEME

The Guaranteed Interview Scheme will expand on our commitments as a Disability Confident Employer to offer an interview to an applicant who declares they have a disability and meet the minimum requirement.

We will be offering guaranteed first-round interviews for individuals who identify as:

– Disabled

– A member of the Global Majority (people from Black, Asian, Mixed, and other ethnic groups who often racialised as ‘ethnic minorities)

– A member of the LGBTQ+ community

AND

-Meet the median score for this role

You can take part in the Guaranteed Interview Scheme by selecting that you are a member of one of these communities on your application and agreeing to participate.

ANONYMOUS FIRST-ROUND INTERVIEWS

Anonymous first-round interviews involve candidates conducting their first-round interview online via zoom, with their camera off and microphone on. This is to reduce the scope of unconscious bias based on physical appearance and attributes.  The interview panel will be on camera for the interview, and the second-round interview will be in person.

Any questions about the scheme and our positive action approach, please contact us at hr@libertyhumanrights.org.uk.

Executive Committee Member

Executive Committee / Subcommittee Member – Candidate Brief

Liberty is recruiting individuals to oversee its strategic direction, finances and support its senior leadership team, as co-opted members of its sub-committees and as potential future members of its Executive Committee (Board).

Founded in 1934, Liberty challenges injustice, defends freedom and campaigns to make sure everyone in the UK is treated fairly. We champion anyone whose rights come under threat, from Gypsy, Roma and Traveller communities, to migrants, protesters, Government whistle-blowers and people under surveillance. We’ve grown to become the UK’s largest and most impactful civil liberties organisation, with more than 15,000 members and over 200,000 supporters.

If you share our values, we’d like to hear from you. You’d be joining a dedicated, committed organisation determined to protect human rights in the U.K.

We are looking for people with skills in or experiences with some of the following areas:

  1. Equality, diversity and inclusion programmes and initiatives
  2. Fundraising and development in the non-profit sector
  3. Human resource matters
  4. Active legal practice in one or more of the areas of Liberty campaigns

It would also be beneficial if candidates have previously undertaken senior leadership roles, especially prior Board and/or governance experience, particularly in mission-driven, non-profit organisations.

We particularly welcome applications from people whose lived experience reflects communities centred in our campaigns and those most at risk of being marginalised

This is an unpaid, voluntary role, though reasonable expenses can be reimbursed.

Sub-committee meetings are online for 1-2 hours up to 6 times per year and some very infrequent attendance at Liberty’s London offices may be required. The Executive Committee meets at least six times a year. Executive Committee Members are also required to join a subcommittee to further the work of the organisation.

We will be accepting applications and conducting interviews on a rolling basis with no fixed closing date.

To apply for this role, please send a CV and cover letter of no more than two pages, outlining your relevant skills and experience, as well as your motivation, to hr@libertyhumanrights.org.uk.

Affinity Groups

Employee Relations Groups, or ERGs, are an important measure of commitment by employers to staff.

At Liberty our ERGs are called Affinity Groups and we currently have three. Our Staff of Colour Group, LGBTQ+ Group, and Disability Network.

The key focus for each group is to support staff, welcome new joiners and celebrate communities.

While Affinity Groups exist for their members, they also operate on an opt-in basis for wider consultations. This means that groups are supported in coming together to collectively respond to internal processes that impact staff, such as policy changes, if they choose.

All our Affinity Groups have a yearly budget and members have protected time off available to help them to organise or participate in group activities.
